Dear Asbury Friends,
I made it to Saint Louis about 2 p.m. and I must say, a winter train ride across the state of Missouri is a wonderful way to spend five hours. It’s fit for coffee, reading, and an occasional nap.
Once here, it was a day of preparation - affixing crosses to “Welcome Cards” – 1,000 in all – to be given to all delegates as they enter the conference this (Saturday) morning. Each card offers an encouragement to vote for the One Church Plan. It was a great way to meet new friends: Texas, Kansas, even Oklahoma. The love of God knows no bounds.
The other part of the day was spent finding a local printer to help produce a daily one sheet to be distributed to delegates each morning, too. The winner was Fed Ex. After talking with a representative at a local Saint Louis Fed Ex office, I received a call from the national office, somewhere in Texas. Remember, the love of God is boundless. Apparently, the local Saint Louis office called the national office. A national rep then call me to inquire about the purpose of the one sheet.
I explained how a world-wide General Conference of The United Methodist Church in Saint Louis was gathering to vote on one issue: a more-full inclusion of LGBTQ persons in the church. I was the one sheet was advocating for inclusion.
“Well, no one should be excluded from a church,” she said. And, with that the price dropped substantially.
Go figure. If someone I don’t even know from Fed Ex can figure it out, well we have hope!
Pray, pray, pray.
